Material Type

In the past, typefaces were often created based on the materials used. In the digital age, this material look has been completely lost, as typefaces are created artificially or using software. This project involved designing a font that once again bears the clear signature of a material.

I explored the idea of designing a font using water and creating a font out of concrete. I created the font made of water by placing drops of water on a sheet of paper and burning round them with an open flame.

I developed the concrete font by casting steel concrete slabs. I cut the steel elements into letters and then roughly hammered them out.
